Hell my name is Josh and I am new to chickens and the urban farming stuff. Well to be honest I haven't started yet, I am still in my research phase and think I am almost ready to go. I am very excited to start my adventures in chickenry. I am make roads and install underground utilities in the greater Seattle area. I'm currently reading up on everything I need to know as a newbie for my chicken companions. I look forward to being able to have my own chickens, and to share knowledge and experiences here. Thanks for reading!

You've come to the right place to learn about chickens! Here are some sections for you to look at to get you started:

First of all, have a look through the Learning centre: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

You'll need some kind of housing for your chooks, so if you feel like building something have a look here for coop and brooder (chick housing) designs:

Have you picked breeds yet? Breed reviews and discussions are over here:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds (and yes, you can keep different breeds together

And finally, for some frequently asked questions and links to answers have a look here:

As you move around the forum you will also see "sticky threads" in blue above the regular threads. Those are also well worth a read. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. We'll be happy to assist. Enjoy the site and keep up posted!
