My WC Polish hen, Milly, has always been kind of flighty and a bit wacky. From what I understand, that is not unusual for that breed. She also did not start laying until the end of January. She was 8 months old. The others have been laying for months. She'd been laying an egg every other day since she started. She layed yesterday, so I figured today was a day off. When I was out in the coop earlier, I found another egg in her spot- behind the cinder block I have the water fount on.

Add to that, she has always been the lowest on the pecking order. I have been locking the "big, bad hens" in the coop for a short bit when I put treats out in the run, just so Milly would get some, at least. Otherwise, the Red Stars and Dominiques would chase her away from all the good stuff. I've noticed the last few days, Milly pushes her way in to the bowl just fine! And I put fresh shavings down in the coop today. With the snow all over the ground, they have been dust - err- shaving bathing and they love the fresh stuff. So the Stars and Doms were roling and stretching and all that good chicken bath stuff, when Milly comes in from outside, takes one look at the pile and decides she wants (what must have been) the best spot. So she walked up to the Star lying there and pecked her- really good! A couple pecks and that girl got up and hustled her butt off so Milly could get in there.

I guess my little white girl is all growed up now, huh? *sniff*

I've also noticed that lately my little EE who is lowest on the pecking order has suddenly started sticking up for herself. She'll run right up to the other girls and steal treats out of their mouths. I love it when they finally come in to their own. Go Milly!!!
