Well that wasn't fun

Yes those LITTLE ones, I also learned this summer, there are TWO general species of those wasps out here. The bigger ones are the butthole species... that you kill as soon as you see them setting up shop. BUT, the smaller ones you describe, are great for getting bugs and tend to be very non aggressive. I see them in my dogwoods often and other plants but for the most part they don't really go after you, UNLESS... you do what my dumb hick self did and try to give them the crocodile dundee test.

Another wasp that I have not had too many aggression issues with are the mud daubers, they seem decent too. I really do NOT like to kill things, that kill other bugs BUT... when they do me dirty... well all bets are off.

Now that I think about it, that nest could have only been there 4 or 5 days tops, and it got THAT big that quick? What they eating... Wheaties and my Spinach???

Your mileage may vary, but I've had great success with getting the fire out of the sting by rubbing ammonia on the wound.
So sorry that this happened to you, and thankfully you weren't allergic.
the hornet or the fire ants? I might try ammonia next time i find fire ants, which i seem to do on an almost weekly case here. I DO actively go after them though, it's that time of the year where they really nest up and you have to be proactive on them.

This is going to sound crazy but im in my 50's and last year was the first time I EVER got lit by a paper wasp. THe ones that make the coin like nests on the side of your house (or chickens house) that is, Recently now it seems like im making up for lost time, I got popped 3 or 4 times this year already by them.

So next time, im going to bust an inhaler and rub it on, see if the ammonia takes the sting out. Thank you for that!

I've run into wasp nests more times than I care to admit. They would get into the smallest holes and build nests out of sight.

One year, we blew a fuse, and I ran out to throw the breaker. There was a huge wasp nest in the box. They flew out at me, sting my face, got in my hair. Ugh... and the daggum things just kept stinging and stinging...

Found out I'm not allergic, though.
