Hello All,
First off, thank you to everyone here for all of the valuable information and entertaining stories that I have read over the past few months. I have learned A LOT from reading through these forums and it has undoubtedly benefited my chicken's quality of life so if they could talk (well, I guess they can talk. But of they could speak human...) I'm sure they would thank you too.
Right now I have a flock of 8 birds that are happily living in my backyard just about an hour north of Boston. The flock consists of 2 "Green Queens" (easter eggers), 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, and 4 Buff Orpingtons.
I decided to get into chickens because (a) I have been wanting to raise chickens for years, (b) my 9-year-old daughter was begging for another pet (we have 2 cats) and I did not want a dog, lizard, gerbil or any of the other creatures she was campaigning for, and (c) I wanted to teach my kids about sustainability, the interconnection of living things to their environment, and to foster in them a deeper appreciation off where their food comes from. I think chickens are a perfect medium for doing those things as they provide us with eggs to eat and poop for us to compost. The compost goes into the garden and helps us grow food. What leftover food we don't eat we give to the chickens which they turn into more eggs to eat and more poop to compost and put into our garden and grows us more food, and so on. They are marvelous little teachers.
I suppose another reason I wanted to raise chickens is that I have been a "birder" since I was 10 so that's (*gulp*) 36 years that I have been traveling the world looking for and lecturing about (am a wildlife biologist) wild birds so having such an intimate window into the life cycle of birds just suits me. Chickens are not so different from their wild cousins.
OK, enough about me and why I raise birds. Now I'm going to start a new thread - complete with pics - so all of you experts can help me figure out how many of my 8 "hens" are actually roos
which is the reason I decided to join this great forum.
Thanks again.
