I've seen what everyone else has posted, such nice homes for your chicks. With all the nice ones I'm a lil ashamed to show these, but none the less i'm proud of it so far and seeing you shared I figured I would as well. It's definitely a work in progress so please don't laugh too hard.

This is their place, like I said it's a work in progress, this weekend I'm raising the roost and the roof on the one on the right. And then come the roof.

I'm trying to make it so that if a move was ever needed the buildings would stay separate to make the process easier.

Here are the nesting boxes:

There are 7 in these quarters 3 Rhode island reds and 4 black chickens, not sure the breed but when the light hits them they are beautiful with all the colors. Any suggestions would be welcomed seeing this is my first attempt. I was told that the one on the right will need to be wrapped and enclosed as time draws closer to colder weather

Amazing how they lay those perfectly round little white eggs with dimples and writing on them.....

lol someone told me if i put golf balls in the nesting boxes it would help them adapt to where to lay. I took that pic the first day I made the boxes

Looks like your off to a good start. It's great that you are on the ball and already thinking about winter. Not everyone on BYC has fantastic looking coops. I am guessing the ones that don't, aren't brave enough to post their pictures on here. It would be interesting to see all the "not so good lookin" coops. Chickens don't know if they are living in upscale coops or in the getto's....and don't care. So, l say...let's see pics of the getto coops, the not so pretty coops, and show your chickies. I bet we won't be able to tell any difference in the chickens that are "up town", "down town" , or on the other side of the track chickens.

I think your coop rocks! Hold your head up high! Don't be ashamed!

Your peeps look happy!

The coop on the left has a place where predators can get in on the top, from what I can tell.

Do they go to a more secure part of the coop at night? Also, hardware cloth would be more secure than chicken wire from racoons, even if it is just the bottom 2 feet of the fencing from what I have read on this message board.

Also, you might want to either bury some hardware cloth or have an "apron" that fans outward at the base of the fence to deter diggers.

Just some helpful suggestions!

I am a newbee also and still learning but i will say that with my coop that my DH built....we first put the welded wire that is one and a half inches by like 3 inches (rectangle) up first and realized that the young hens that we were getting could put most of their bodys threw it so we then put the hex. wire on the outside of that....well one morning i went to check on the girls and almost all of the hex wire had been pulled, chewed, totally wrecked....by what i could tell by the hair i found around the pen by the dog next door....if we had not had the welded wire up....she would have gotten all of my new hens....if you have any predators around you might want to put some stronger wire around the outside of the pen....just a suggestion....i agree...the chickens dont care where they live as long as they have the necessity's

At least you have nest boxes!!! It looks great!!! CUDO'S!!! I will probably end up starting out with cardboard boxes at the rate we are going...but at least we have 3 more weeks before they turn 16 weeks and by the looks of their ever reddening faces...I think they will all be ready...

About the golf balls in the nesting boxes, I did this too. I have had my chickens *pullets since Monday. They haven't layed in the nesting boxes at all? I did put one in the nesting boxes, she looked at me with a "what are you doing" look and jumped down. Should I continue to put them in the nesting boxes so they know they are there? What do you all suggest? I have one golf ball, *literally 1, and I have 3 untouched nesting boxes.

Nice big nest boxes. I never did do the golf ball thing figuring the chickens will know where to lay when the time comes. Sure enough, they lay in the nest boxes.

You should go check out the Preditors and Pest section do read up on what can happen to chickens kept in coops with chicken wire only. It's just a matter of time before preditors discover your chicken dinners.
