Yesterday, my beautiful Wellsummer laid her first egg in months, a tiny brown speckled egg, no bigger than a Robin egg, and then she died today. I like to think of it as her final gift, even if the egg was so small. Anyway, she got sick months ago and had never really recovered. She would walk around with beak open and act like she was coughing, but nothing came out. I thought she might die way back in August, but she survived until now.

I don't see any abnormal behaviors in my other remaining 7 chickens, but is there anything I should be looking for specifically? Thanks for any suggestions.

A necropsy with labs is the only way to know just what might have killed her.
If it's some kind of respiratory disease, your whole flock has been exposed and are likely carriers. It may not show up as an active disease with symptoms unless there is undue stress.
