Take your pick. It depends on the strain in each breed. One thing tho, don't cross the breeds, seeking a darker egg. Marans breeders are still cleaning up the mess from when it was tried earlier. Best to pick one breed and just mate the darkest layers to the boys whose moms were the darkest layers. That makes for darker eggs in future generations. Course, while you are doing that, still have to balance the other taits in the fowl so breed type stays superior.
