I’ve got two Welsh Harlequin ducklings (around 3 weeks old) and I noticed today that their bills are different colors. Both are supposed to be female…does this mean one is not? Or is it too soon to tell? One is pale (and she’s actually a bigger duck). One is grey-ish (and she’s smaller but her feathers coming in look darker).

I’m not sure, but I read that they can be auto sexed when they are two or three days old by Bill color and the girls have the lighter color bills , but by day four that is no longer a way to sex them. You have to wait until they four weeks old or so, and listen for their voices. (only the girls really quack clearly.) @cheezenkwackers may know

Bill color sexing of Harlequins only applies at hatch if they have been bred for it. Welsh Harlequin’s usually have dark bills. But, poor breeding by some hatcheries has resulted in yellow bills in some. I suspect you have two girls but one will have a wrong colored bill.

The do make two different noises - one peeps and one squeaks - but based on my history with ducklings, neither is indication of a male/female difference. I guess we’ll see 😅

That works for me. I just got them round out my flock a bit and keep my two drakes from fighting so much. I did notice the one with the darker bill has slightly darker feet.

If they're supposed to be female then that's probably what they are. Welsh Harlequins are sexed after they hatch so if you bought them and the breeder said they are female they they most likely are

Some have a bit of mixed genetics these days. That duck looks like a mix. By that age, the bills should both be dark, with the male getting a lighter, greenish bill eventually. The one in the front looks like a normal female. I see the date, did they turn out both females?

Both are girls. Kind of hard to tell here, but the one I wasn’t sure about is almost white with a few black specks and still has the light yellowish bill. (She’s the second one from the right.) but I still love her 🤣
