I just recently hatched 3 Welsummers, they are about 3 weeks old, and I was wondering if anyone knew about their comb size. They all three have really big combs. They're huge! I was just wondering if this was common at this age with this breed or if I have three roosters. Thanks!

I just looked up a picture of adult welsummers and they do have a large single comb. I am use to seeing rose combs so when my welsummers start getting older it will be new for me. Mine are just 6 days old. Can you post picture? Someone with welsummer experience will be able to tell you for sure. You may need to wait until they are 6 to 8 weeks old before you will know forsure.

My welsummer roos all have very large single combs - larger than any others I've seen so far.

At three weeks, look at their chest feathers. Black chest=roo. All 3 of mine had pretty big combs (that is to say, they definately had them, as opposed to most chicks who are still flattish) but by about 4-5 weeks the roo combs doubled.

I think i read somewhere that a pullets chest will be brown and a roos chest is black, but i dont think that shows up till later.

Here is a pic of my Welsummer pullets at 7 weeks. Very small combs.

So I tend to agree that you have 3 little roos. Sorry. The good
news is that welsummer roos are absolutely gorgeous!

Here's a pic of one of my little men at 8 weeks old.

The rooster chest can be mottled with mahogany and black or mostly black. I am hoping that the Standard of Perfection will come out soon with new information on the Welsummer colorings.

The pullet should have salmon coloring on her chest. Red Partridge is the common color in the Welsummers.

All of these birds are lovely! Thanks for sharing!
