heya! these guys are just a few days over 1 month old, 2 welsummers and one brahma!

We’re pretty confident that the brahma is a girl at this point, very timid nature, always sticking close to mum, almost nonexistent comb and barely any wattles. i don’t think it’s a question lol.

but our 2 welsummers on the other hand.. one started showing signs of being a boy (big comb, wattles, standing upright, straying from mum) although the other seemed like a girl until around a few days ago when ‘her’ comb suddenly grew massively !! 😭 now they’re practically identical and it takes a while to tell who’s who.

I saw their saddle/neck feathers coming in today, and they both certainly look very oval shaped and not like roo feathers.

We’ve had this conundrum with a welsummer before- we all totally thought our beloved Charlie was a boy because of her massive comb but no, lo and behold she is a hen.

photos in order -
welsummer 1, called Coco (suspect roo)
welsummer 2, called April (suspect girl)
+ the brahma, called Bunny

The first 2 are probably Speckled Sussex. Also look like cockerels.

woah seriously? what makes you say that :0 i guess i haven’t had much exposure to welsummers, and i don’t have any old pics of our last one as a baby to compare. the breeder totally could’ve gotten it wrong though! i wouldn’t mind a couple of speckled sussex, they look cool as hell!

Speckled Sussex usually feather out with white breasts due to the mottling gene. One thing that's throwing me off abit is the leg color, which doesn't fit a Sussex. So, maybe they're odd balls. Update as they grow?

Welsummer males feather out with black breast feathers.

found some old pics of our last welsummer at a similar age- seems as if you’re correct, she’s bright orange 🤣 definitely not like these guys, i’ll totally update as they grow! thanks for letting us know!

Your first two cockerels are likely mixed breeds. Sussex should have white skin and these have very prominent yellow legs. The Brahma looks like a pullet so far assuming she doesn't develop any black on her breast. It's barely at the age where differences become noticeable!

small update on these guys as you asked, they’re still super friendly which is pretty surprising as i’m quite sure they’re both roos, one of them keeps trying to fight our adult roo who’s like triple the size of him 😭

this is April :

And this is the only pic of Coco i could get :

Also! you said that welsummer roos present with black feathers on their chests? we have one (pretty sure she’s a welsummer..) baby who just started growing chest feathers + they’re orange, would you say she’s a girl? She’s super friendly and definitely one of my favs
