Welsummer vs BLRW...Which Lays Better?

Exactly the way I feel, Katy. I'm not depending on them to give me all the eggs, so as long as they lay 2-3/wk, that'll be okay. Won't be getting many hatching eggs, so I'll be lucky to get 2 pullets out of it. CarriBrown and I are doing an EggSwap of sorts, Blue Orps for BLRWs from her Hotwing, Nugget & Potpie.

Yep, I've found it nearly impossible to get good production from exhibition stock. It really stinks... everyone wants both! I don't think their laying will be too bad. I got them just to look at, and if they lay an egg here or there its a bonus. Although the hobby began with eggs as the priority, things shifted quickly and now thats on the bottom of the list. Pets first, production second.

I have my original hatchery flock for great egg production and these will just be something beautiful to look in addition to my Blue Orpington flock. So, no pressure for the pretty girls! I get so irritated with one of my Blue Orp girls, who is now taking yet another break from laying-I tell her I do expect an egg here and there; she cocks her pretty head and gives me this silly look. I can just see her saying, "But, Mom! I dont need to lay eggs! I'm beautiful!" She's so goofy, you gotta love her.

Nugget is a pretty good layer. She was doing five or so a week... I think they started a Chicken Union because I'm not getting squat from any of them right now.

Potpie is now looking like she's about to lay!

I think DH brought in an egg this morning that's Velvet's, but I'm not completely positive. I hope so! She's been off more than a week now. Skye lays about every day, but not Miss Velvet, oh, no. She'll lay daily for awhile, then suddenly, goes on vacation.

LOL, hmm, well, Jeff, if I ever decide she's just too much of a little diva for my flock, I'll give you a call. She has this way of cocking her head and looking up when I lecture her on the fine art of being a laying hen that just cracks me up. I think I'd miss the tubby little minx.

Yeah, I am there with you Katy. I got mine for the variety. I like to splash the yard with different birds. It's a nice feeling to be in the kitchen and look out the window at all the birds foraging...there a banty, there an EE, there a RED, there a BR...oh ANOTHER banty. And so forth.

Eggs are just a nice bonus!

Well, Miss Velvet must have heard us talking about her because she laid an egg today, LOL. She is just so silly-she'll jump and run and play like a puppy with the other girls. I love to watch her when she does that.
