Went for a Rat, Came back with a...

Your new baby is ADORABLE! Much better choice than a rat IMO. We had a ferret when we lived in CA, smuggled her in from Vegas. She was the best pet we ever owned. When we moved to WA and she was legal, we'd take her everywhere with us. Unfortunately Rio passed away from cancer 2 years ago, and we are unable to replace her because my allergies have gotten too bad. Towards the end of her life I couldn't be in the same room with her for more than 5 minutes.

I will never forget what a fun, loving pet she was- Enjoy your new little friend- even when it steals your car keys!

Or decides to attack my socks while they're on my feet!

I'm just glad the Shih Tzu and her get along so well! Vida wears out Goose fast! The poodle...I don't trust him with anything smaller than Vida. He has "that" look in his eyes.

redhen, your post made me laugh so hard!

I love the visual I got on that!

Ferrets are adorable, have had them in the past. It does take a bit to keep the smell down though.
LOL, what a great name!!

I live in CA, too. Ya know what's funny? PetSmart(the local one is having everything on sale because they are closing!) carries ferret food.

I know! Crazy right? I suppose they have it "just in case" someone is getting a gift for a friend out of state. No laws saying you can't buy supplies for them!

ETA: fixing a typo...

There is a great product called Zapsit which will keep the odor down. But with a ferret you will have to deal with getting used to a certain amount of musk. Its worth it because they are SO cute!

mypetfish.com and there is another one, mypetplace.com I think has wonderful ferret stuff. You do need a good food, NOT dry cat food. Years ago people thought feeding them milk and bread was the way to go

. We have had three, still have one and she is darling. The first one we had was hilarious, she would hide and jump out at you and tormented the dogs and cats till they were crazy . . .they DO smell, but keeping the cage clean is the most important thing, as well as some stuff in a pump bottle (much cheaper at mypetplace!) that you put in their water that helps to deodorize them too. It is sort of a musky smell, and not that bad if you are an animal lover. They are the best little pets and I would rather have them other than a mouse or hamster although I love them too.

Don't forget to let us know when Goose does the Happy Dance or Jump for Joy dance!!! I watched a female ferret one summer for one of the local doctor's daughter and Lucy was so fun:) She loved exploring and chasing me from room to room, dancing for joy, especially when I took a shower, she thought that was the greatest fun;) If I hadn't had so many cats and dogs at my cabin, I would have taken her there but we had to settle for the apartment in town near the mouth of a river w/beach to keep everyone safe and happy. My cousin Anette had four and had her DH make a wall length cage from floor to ceiling and many decks for theirs;)
