Went to the Colorado State Fair yesterday.

Last couple of years our fair had less birds but I think part of it was when you could enter them. If it hadn't been for the 25 birds my boys entered it would have looked real sad. As far as quailty good looking birds. The people that run it Show top quality birds and have been in the showing birds for 40+ years.

Went to the Minnesota State Fair this past Wednesday. The first week of the fair is the 4-H poultry and the second week is the Open Class. I am happy to report the labeling on the pens was very good and all the birds had nice deep water cups that were all full. You should forward your post in a email form to your State Fair they probably have a website like ours does. I am sure they would want to know because the success of the fair depends on the visitors. Happy healthy livestock makes better viewing and creates happy visitors.

Our state fair is a great state fair... Actually, the Iowa State Fair is so great that they made a song for it, and a movie.
But, the poultry barn, while completely full, was only showing birds for 4 days (2 4-H days, 2 open show days). However, unlike some described in this thread, the birds were of extremely good quality and all labelled correctly.
I had to buy bantam call ducks when the show was over. yippee.

Well....

I went to ours yesterday (Kansas) and there was some outstanding Buff Orpingtons. I drooled and wrote down their contact information.

My niece called them pompoms with heads! Then when she saw the polish, she said a pompom head to go with the pompom body.

But it was pretty bare of the standard breeds. Not a single standard Wyandotte. Only one lone Bantam Columbian Wyandotte. There were some nice Australorps and a few dark Rhode Island Reds. Only about 6 silkies, loads of pigeons and bantams, and one lone Polish hen. Some Ameraucana's with yellow legs, and I am pretty sure I saw a cochin with a V comb that was marked as a rose comb breed.

There were 3 Sebastapol geese, some nice calls and other ducks.

I was going to go first thing Monday morning to check out the poultry, but it doesn't sound like it's worth the trip!!!
No SLWs at all?

I decided to go ahead and go this morning since I had to go get groceries anyway. Tazcat...I wonder if all the birds were checked in yet when you were there? I was pleasantly surprised with how many birds there were. Many more than the last time I was there probably 4 or 5 years ago. I wasn't real impressed with the quality of a lot of them. I didn't spend much time looking at the waterfowl, but there's was a lot at that end of the building. There were quite a few bantam wyandottes, but I didn't see any standard size ones. There were lots of other bantams. I saw on the fair's website that there are 1500 cages available and I saw very few empty ones. I didn't come home drooling over any of them tho......and I wouldn't trade any of mine for any that I saw.

The last state fair I went to was the Iowa State Fair and it was glorious. We Iowans really know our livestock. Isn't it sad though that I've lived in Colorado all this time and never gone to the state fair? I have gone to the county fairs a few times and was disappointed with the animals in general.
