Went to tsc today

Yep, should work fine for laying birds, especially if you're not feeding any treats...
....until they molt, then more protein and less calcium would be good.

Our local feed store was out of our normal All Purpose flock raiser I usually feed my girls so we instead gave them a Meat Maker feed.. oh my lord, they love it.. More protien for sure, they are eating less but they came out of the molt in record time.. averaged about 4 weeks.. everyone is looking fat and sassy and I was suprised to find extra eggs the last two days! While I didnt intend to test anything I am now wondering if feeding the meat bird rations wasnt something I might do every late fall/early winter to help the girls out! IF egg production holds I might just be swearing by it.

Knowing, and sharing, the protein and calcium percentages really helps us all understand what we are talking about.

I am assuming you must live in an area with 4 seasons (lucky duck!!) and I think that sounds like a smart plan. One of my older ladies (she’s a 1 1/2) just went into molt for the first time....I have upped their protein intake myself here lately....even though our weather is still relatively warm....I dunno if we will see frost or not...do you feed them any kitchen scraps or anything? My girls are The Most Spoiled Chickens In The World!! So along with feed and scratch and sunflower seeds and whatever they get to forage for when we let them roam...they are eating game bird and feather fixer. Whew!!

Because many TSC employees know jack about chickens? :D

I thought flipping chicks upside down was an extremely accurate sexing method. Are you saying it might not be!

They also said that this prefab coop would hold 8 chickens. Could that be wrong! Oh no!

Those are just 2 of my favorite TSC'isms.

We do try to have four seasons although blink and you might miss it lol

Oregon (Willamette Valley) can be unpredictable.
I haven't given my girls the BOSS , instead I hoard that for my very Pregnant goats ;) I expect some sort of a slow down in the pre winter months, back when I first started on BYC i used to hear how the hen start coming back into lay after Winter solstice, I tracked it the first two years and sure enough they did.. Last year must have been an off year because I didnt start getting more eggs until well after January, this year egg production went up well before Winter solstice so Im over here like.. "durn chickens, dont they know they are breaking all the norms as of what I have been told they would or should do?"

Bahahaha yes I would absolutely love it if my ladies could actually figure that out!! They recently got a new nest box....the jury is still very much put on it. Picky...picky...picky. I haven’t been able to track laying patterns/times yet. They laid all through the winter here...all spring...all summer and they’re still laying....somewhere in the yard. I’ve had to remind them Easter is over and I don’t need to search for eggs....but as I said, new nest box! But thanks for the tip, I am gonna try to track and see how long my molty lady goes without laying.

Our chickens just got switched to layers feed the past week or so, and laid their first eggs today. We’ve been giving them scratch grains mixed in with their normal feed. I’m usually doing equal parts. Is this bad policy since you guys have mentioned it should be only 10% or so of the diet?
