Hi,
We are husband and wife. We are new chicken owners, although we had chickens a long time ago.
We have a mixture of Australorp's and Easter Eggers. We live in the Sonoran Desert of AZ and tried to pick as heat tolerant birds as we could find. We appreciate any knowledge you can pass on to us!
Thanks!

Welcome to BYC!

Have you tried sand in your coop and run? I use it here in every poultry area. As you know, the evaporative effect with water is very cooling. I dig my sand out of nearby arroyo's and dry washes for free. You can hose this stuff down in the summer time and the birds will stay incredibly cool. I mean the feet are actually cool to the touch when the sand is wet! It is easy to maintain, keeps the flies away, no poop smells and the chickens love to scratch in it. If you are interested in doing this, go out and find a sand vein. You will know it is sand when you squeeze and wet it. If it falls apart in your hands, it is sand. If it clumps it is dirt.

Here is a pic of what I am talking about....(with chicken of course, LOL)

Here is a nice thread you can read thru about sand. You can also get commercial stuff or even sand from sand and gravel companies and have it delivered...

My Aussies do really well in both heat and cold. Good luck with your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Thank you, everyone!! Great info, Kelsie!! Thank you so much!
