Hi My Name Is Sam,
I lost a hen a few months ago. We were not sure what it was so we went to the place that we bought the hen. We told them our story, that we got home and all the hens motor skills were gone. She couldn't run, walk or fly. The reason I am writing this is because today I found another one of my chickens had lost its skills to walk and fly. I didn't want to make the same mistake by leaving her so I put her in my shed with the windows open and food/water. This afternoon she was dead. I live on a pond so I cant remove any still water that could be holding mosquito eggs. Is their anything I can do now or if this happens to another hen? And Is it even West Nile i'm dealing with?

I'm sorry that I don't have that information available to me. I have not heard of chickens being infected by Nile virus. I know it has killed off many blue jays and crows but doesn't affect most other wild breeds.

Is it possible your birds may have died from Mareks disease - it usually starts by causing paralyasis?

You may want to post under "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures thread."

Welcome to BYC!

Chickens develop antibodies to West Nile Virus. They can show slight symptoms, but it is very rare that they get full blown symptoms with West Nile, if ever. I have had a couple of quail that did contract West Nile and the first thing you see is tremors of the neck and head. The paralysis comes later, and rarely did they fail to be able to walk completely.

I think you have Mareks going thru your flock. So you might want to post this in our emergency section for more help with Mareks.

So sorry for all your losses. I hope you can get this figured out soon.
