Hello, do we have any new West Tennessee members that's joined on here?, I wonder why there's not a lot of traffic or conversation with our chicken farmers etc on here? YHVH bless you all...

Hi! Well, probably cuz who wants to say they're not having fun cleaning coops and changing bedding and changing waterers in sub-freezing weather with no eggs in return. I just got my first egg in weeks the other day. But, the sun is shining and longer days are just ahead. Gotta keep the faith.

Hi! I've been meaning to post here, but kept forgetting. I live in Lakeland, a small city bordering northeast Memphis. As far as I can tell, we are the only people in our subdivision with chickens in the backyard. Fortunately, the neighbors don't mind our crowing roosters. At the moment, we have 3 EE hens, 2 Dominique hens, an Olive Egger rooster, 2 Serama cockerels, 1 Serama pullet & her 5 chicks, 2 bantam Cochin pullers and 2 Silkie hens. We just started raising chickens about 3 years ago and we're crazy about them.

anyne tried R and J feed 22% layer pellet cant seem to find anywhere else around the Jackson Milan area

I use it also! I also used to get it from back in the saddle. I now get it from the feed store out of Lexington. They sell it for $11.50 a 50 lb bag. It's a different brand but same size and protein. My chickens love it.

Try putting a light in their house or where they roost. Mine had quit laying and when I put the light in they started up again. Not all of them though.

Chickens need 14 hours of light to keep laying. Put a light in their coop..100watts per 10 sq ft.
I have my light on a timer so that it comes on 2 hours before sunrise and then again at dusk for remaining time to equal 14 hours of light. Mine lay all winter.

I have never used a light, and have only 9 white leg horn hens old enough to lay, and get 6-9 eggs every day, averaging 8 eggs every day, they haven't slowed down yet. Praise Yehshua The Messiah! Amen

Good to hear from you. Actually, I've been getting eggs every day (with the exception of 2 days) for the past five weeks. Really no need for lights. I was just whining cuz I still have California blood and didn't like those sub-freezing mornings. They wouldn't even come out when we had the 5" of snow, so I carried them to the area under the porch. (They could've plowed their fluffy bodies through it, I'm sure.)

My "flock" (of 3 Olive Eggers) is in a chicken tractor with a small (~3' x 4') coop above a pen about ~3' x 6'. They free-range during the day and put themselves to bed. But since their door is in the floor of the coop, I have to let 'em out and lock 'em in to keep them safe from predators. I look forward to the day when I can get a bigger coop, more chickens, and an automatic door.

I'm just finishing up my bag of Purina Layena with Omega 3 I got from TSC. Anyone else have experience with this feed? They seem to like it fine and I have to give the eggs a good whack to crack them. Beautiful yolks so bright they almost look like apricot halves. We're all so blessed!
