Hey everybody! We just bought some chicks from Tractor Supply Company and are working with friends to start our flock. Our friends are going to house the chicks until we are totally ready for them. They already have over a dozen chickens so we are in good hands having a good knowledge source to help us.
That said, we decided to join backyardchickens.com because we want to continue to watch videos and continue reading about everyone else's experience(s) with chicken flock management.
Oops! Just saw the sticky about introducing ourselves:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are totally new to chickens and we bought our chicks yesterday.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We bought a dozen, but the family that is helping us will keep we are only going to have three to start.
(3) What breeds do you have?
This is a good question because when we bought the chicks, they were all female, but they were not sorted by type. Since that filter was left out, we will find out when they grow up a little. That last sentence sounded a lot like Nancy Pelosi. I am in a quandary now about what to name the third chick (we already have the first two names: "Eggplant" and "Boo-Boo Chicken"). Should we name the third one "Princess Lay-a" or "Nancy Pelosi" because we had to find out what they were AFTER we bought them....doh!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
My wife and I found backyardchickens.com from doing research on chicken tending and in looking for chicken coop designs.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Keeping our four year old busy.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My wife and I have a son Ethan, 4, and a Husky named Tahoe, 8. We are both teachers. She is a fourth grade teacher and I am a math teacher.

and Welcome To BYC! Cute chicks! I'd vote Princess Lay-a for the name since that is what you hope she will do.
