My RH needs to be 86% and my dry thermometer temp needs to be a 99. Since I have added the string and water to the dry thermometer to make it a hygrometer, does that mean the new temp reading (wet bulb) on the thermometer should be 95 degrees?

I am not sure why you want RH to be at 86% that is very high. I think you want your wet bulb to read about 86 degrees to have a relative humidity in the 50's or so. You will need to down load your chart and it will tell you what your RH is on wet and dry bulb to achieve desired RH. I would bet that 95 wet bulb is close to correct with a desried 86 RH. You have a chart right?

I am hatching goose eggs and my bator is supposed to be at 86% humidity. I assumed RH is the same thing. Please correct me. I do have a chart but I don't really understand how to do the wet bulb reading.

Duh ya goose eggs. The wet wick that you have on your thermometer will read cooler than the dry one. The evaporation process cools it. The lower the humidity the faster it evaporates and the lower the temp. The wet bulb will read less than the dry bulb unless the RH is 100% in which case they would read the same. The chart will show you where you are after you take both dry and wet. The lower the wet bulb reading the lower the RH.

If the wet bulb reading below 95 (refer to chart) you will need to add more water to your bator. More surface area of water is all that matters the depth doesnt make any difference, but you already knew that.

Good luck
