I've always heard madder than a wet hen. So, why do my hens insist in running around in the rain? And will they suffer any ill effects? They could get out of it, but they seem to not care!

Some of my chickens head inside the coop when it rains but most of them just carry on with their chicken business. If the wind is strong or a lot of lightening & thunder most will go in, otherwise, they just hang out.

I think if your coop is draft-free they should be fine.

madder than a wet hen.
Seeing your location , I know all about this term.. and Its regional origins.. I have been using it for about 35 years now.. Its like 20 years before I had chickens. Picked it up from my friends that live in Madisonville, and Hopkinsville Ky. Now I'm spreading it to all my northern friends.

Nice dog in your avatar.

I actually found her in a hole in the ground, when she was about six weeks old. I was walking my dogs behind the house and heard a mournful howling. Went to investigate and there she was, a tiny flea & tick ridden little beagle pup. I scooped her up and took her home pulled off the ticks, treated her for fleas. She had followed her mother, from a irresponsible owners home down the road and apparently got left behind. I named her Penny and she's dominant over much bigger dogs now!
