We had a terrible storm (the worst ever) and our coop got literally soaked. Our road got literally flooded and we have been unable to go out to get anything for a couple of days. Water entered our home too and our car got also damaged from the a swing that was tossed against it, but that's a different story.
So for 2 days the bedding has been wet and we couldn't go out to get new shavings. Luckily, our chickens go in the coop only to sleep so they just walk around a bit and then sleep on the roost which is dry. But I am now worried because I am reading that wet shavings can cause severe diseases.
The road is clear now and thought to ask here before I head out and get shavings and clean out the coop (poor chickens will hate me for this as they just were starting to adjust to an automatic door).
How do I clean the coop in this case? We have horse type rubber matting covered by pine shavings and am afraid the water went even under the mats. We never had such bad weather to cause the coop to get so wet. With the wind, the rain got inside the coop through all the ventilation holes since the wind was forcing the rain in all directions. This storm was like being in washing machine, literally.
Will my chickens get sick from two days exposure to wet shavings? How can I prevent illnesses like aspergillosis? We are in Arizona not sure if such disease is common here being that it's normally dry here, but during the summer we get a lot of showers. If I need to use bleach how is it used? Diluted? Thanks!
