While we were on vacation we got our first eggs! We know that the tan eggs are from our RSL, but aren't sure about the speckled one. It was laid in the run, not the nest, and looks a little different. Our RSL has continued to lay in the two days since we returned home, but no one else has. Any opinion? Do your chicken ever lay smooth eggs, then speckled from the same hen? Any of our other girls look like they might be ready to lay? Thanks for any input!

What I've seen from mine is, the speckled egg layers are usually a different hen from the non-speckled. My EE's who lay brown rather than blue (both of them, now) lay a lighter brown, more like beige or light tan. So I'm going to guess that's your BR's egg. Strictly a guess, of course.

i have the same speckled eggs and smooth eggs from two different hens ....... im gonna say its your barred rock thats laying the speckled ones and if it was her first she wont lay another for the first couple of days she also maybe confused as to where to lay them so maybe put gold balls or ping pong balls in the nesting area so she can see something in there all the time and get the idea!!! non of mine laid in the run but i did keep the ping pong balls in my coop once my first hen started laying so they all got the idea now they are all laying every other day but im getting one everyday and since 3 of mine are brahmas they lay the speckled ones and my RIR lays the smooth ones ..... i usually can tell :) good luck just keep watching sometimes you can catch them!!!

i agree and def. the BR!!

Oooo, how exciting! I hope it's Pepper, (the BR). I went and put a couple golf balls in the nest box, so hopefully that will help her figure things out. Angel (the RSL) has no problem, goes in, sings her song, sits for a few minutes, then comes out yelling at us. She wants us to know what she did! I knew they were all pretty close to laying, of course they would start while we were gone.
