What’s one thing you wish you had known before starting to raise backyard poultry?

So much! I have learned so much here on BYC it's unbelievable. I've made modifications to my coop bc of it. I've changed how I feed them. They are no longer my garbage disposers! I've changed how I keep them clean - I had poop trays installed and my coop does not stink (hooray!). I have a compost system now. Just ... so much, and I'm still learning! I guess mostly ... I wish I had known about BYC BEFORE I got my chickens.

How to feed them good food (someone thought homemade feed would be easy). Proper spacing and coop size. I can't believe anyone thought that the piece of poop from TSC was big enough for 7 full size hens. It is now ensconced in the run as their bedroom instead of their only living quarters.
