What’s your favorite type of chicken?

I have 8 one year old hens: 3 Cochins, 1 gold lace Wyandott, 2 Cuckoo Marins, one Barred Rock, and one Speckled Sussex. At the feed store when I picking them out as baby chicks, I just wanted all the kinds. Rooky mistake.

The Speckled Sussex, Rusty, was submissive and quiet, and kind of stayed in the background for the first few months. I worried about her a little that she would get picked on as she was also the smallest chicken. Then about midwinter, she blossomed out and proved to be the smartest, boldest, friendliest chicken in the bunch. She moved up the pecking order fast.

She is quite independent though. It makes me wonder how much of being a leader involves just doing what you want without noticing if anyone follows or not! She is an excellent forager and the others are indeed often smart enough to follow Rusty and forage wherever she does.

I will certainly be getting more Speckled Sussex chickens ASAP. They are my favorite breed so far.

Cochins and Ameraucanas are the best by far.

I am also a fan of Easter Eggers (though not really a breed), brahmas, silkies, and polish.

Hi, so I was just curious what everyone’s favorite breed of chicken was! I thought about making a poll, but realized there are WAY too many breeds to add. I also know that other people have also probably posted something like this, but I was just curious anyway, comment below what your favorite breed is and why (or your top 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10... breeds are!) my top ones so far the sapphire gem and buff Brahmas, because they seem really gentle. I also love silkies but it rains here a lot and I can’t keep roosters, because they are straight run. Obviously if you’ve seen my other 2 threads, I’m pretty new so don’t know a lot of chicken breeds, but I hope to learn more! Sorry it’s so long!

I will always love Australorps because they are so friendly, funny and excellent large egg layers. Plus their green sheen is so beautiful. Wyandottes and Cochins next, and my absolute best chick maker ever was a Welsummer Ameraucana cross. My goodness, no matter what roo I bred with her she made the most gorgeous blue egg laying babies! This year I am raising Bielefelders and Niederrheiners and excited to see how I like them.

I’m glad you like Brahmas, this is my first year having chicks and 1 of my 2 I chose was a Brahma (named cupcake)

I love my brahmas, they are the sweetest birds I've owned so far. Fairly docile and I love how they coo, their size, combs, feathered feet and cream/light brown eggs. They were 'free ranging' the backyard today. As soon as I opened the backdoor a couple unabashed hens flew 10ft up in the air across the yard to be the first to greet me at the steps lol.

Next favorite are the dominiques. Smaller bird, screechy in sound, flighty, but smart and a better layer than the brahmas. And the beggars of the bunch too.

I have always wanted to try Brahmas. They are officially on my list for next year. I’ve maxxed out for this year!

Oh this makes me happy! I have three SS chicks in the brooder. First time with this breed.

This is my current top 10
1) Brahma; love how gentle they are, plus I love big animals with fluffy feet (by knowing this you can also guess what's my favourite horse breed lol)
2) Faverolles; I like a lot the salmon color, they have cute fluffy faces and they are gentle, too
3) Bantam cochin; they're super cute fluffyballs, great moms and they're friendly
4) Australorp; great layers and really elegant
5) Silkie; I like their soft "fur"
6) Cemani; they're so cool, love their total black color
7) Schijndelaar; they lay beautiful greed-blue eggs and the roosters have a fabolous tail
8) Serama; they're so tiny and friendly
9) Marans; they lay very beautiful eggs
10) Polish; I like their crests and their colours
