What a Horrible coop owner... So GROSSED out...

Its great timing right now.. i have an extra brooder type cage that is built on the floor under a table thingy not in use now. So I'll put all the traps in there... The mice can get in and out being there are 2 x 4 sized gaps. Plus I'll take out all the food and water at night.... Its really gross. I hope i get them all!

Just a couple of thoughts, as I have been here before. I had macaws that attracted a lot of mice. I chose to kill then for the following reasons.
One I actually caused the population of mice by having my birds. Repelling them would only cause them to become a problem for all my neighbors. I also did an after dark survey and only saw about 10 mice. When it was all said and done I kiled trapped or otherwise removed well over 120 mice from that coop.

I can't quit laughing over the thought of rambo roos

How about a dim light in your coop instead of night vision goggles?

You know I have found a couple of mice frozen in my buckets that I keep in the barn for the horses. I have moved my hens in there for the winter with a heat lamp and they have been doing nicely. They have a heated waterer and one of those hanging feeders that I hung from the rafter in the barn. I have seen mouse poo and when I make my two daily trips out to the barn I take my Frenchie-pug with me and she always runs around the barn looking for mice. I never thought of there being a bunch of mice in there at night. That freaks me out. Would the mice get into the hanging feeder? I think I may set up some of those bucket traps then. I keep all my chicken and horse feed in brand new metal trash cans so no mice can get in. The horses always eat their grain right away. I guess the only thing left would be the food hanging in the feeder.

Take away all the chicken feed, and they'll start eating the mice!! LOL!

We just put snap-traps around the outside of the run where they would travel to get to the woodpile. Dogs stay away because they know what happens when they get a nose in the trap.

Many caught the first day, with dwindling numbers every day after that. Used Peanut Butter as bait... skookum! (ie 'works real good')

Hey when we have roos in with the hens, no rat atacks. Took the roos out of the pen (the hens backs were getting de-feathered), 1 dead hen with the crop eaten out in a daylight attack. Roos went back in. So far no more attacks. Of course I have upped all the anti-rat activities as well, but they are clever and fast learners. It takes effort to keep ahead of them.

We do buckets during warmer months that have 4 or 5 holes drilled about 4 inches down. Then we fill with water and cover the top of water with sunflower seeds. The rats/mice crawl in there to get the seeds and fall into the water and drown. The other solution is to put a tray of food out for the rats away from the barns and sit on the back porch with a shotgun and a spotlight. It freaks the neighbors out the first couple of times you do it but they are used to us now!

I made the bucket trap with the spinning can... I broke off some livestock salt block and put in the water so it would not freeze. I got 3 in the first night!!!!!!! I do feel bad though... But at least it happens overnight. Hopefully the salt makes it quicker for them...
