Here are my two Wyandottes now at 26 weeks old. They are both from a hatchery and man is there a difference between the two. They look like two totaly different breeds. The SLW is way smaller then the GLW also. I am thinking that these two are the two giving me new eggs now!
SLW named Daisy

I guess someone has said something about that single comb on the SLW. She is a beautiful hen, but sure doesn't show much Wyandotte, outside the SL part. I am surprised at that level of mix from anyone. What color of egg does she lay? That would make a pretty flock.

Both are from a hatchery and yep Daisy looks way off.

She is a sweatheart though. I think she is just a prime example of poor breeding stock I guess. Yes, when I first got her I noticed her comb was different and learned that wyandottes carry a resessive (sp) single comb gene and she defiantly got it.

Forgot the egg part. I think she is laying a light brown egg..not quite sure but I think it is her.

newchickmom09,
The sliver laced one might be a Silver Laced Wyandotte cross but it isnt a pure Silver Laced Wyandotte ( Wyandottes are a Rose comb breed ). I would say it was a Silver Laced Wyandotte crossed with a Columbian Rock. Hatcheries are bad for crossing single comb with rose combs....

SLWs often have single combs, folks. It's from their Cochin ancestry. A small percentage of Wyandottes have single combs, especially hatchery stock. I had one myself. She is a pure SLW, just not great quality, just like my Lorelei. Have read that there is a fertility issues with rose combed breeds and some keep a single combed bird or two to keep fertility up, but I'm sure someone can elaborate on that. Here is my Lorelei (lost her a year ago)

My GLW seemed bigger at first but - they were older by a couple of months but now they are all fully grown they are all about the same size and lay nice palm size light brown eggs. I understand from here that my SLW Rooster when bred with my GLW girls will have SLW babies. I also read somewhere that the red coloring might have come from breeding with brahmas to get the red color and might have made them bigger but mine are all the same size.

[/img] I just realized I don't have a good recent pictures of my camera shy silver girls so I will have to add it and edit later.

The supposed SLW is not Silver Laced, not Wyandotte in type (body shape), has an incorrect tail, single comb. She is in fact a pretty cross bred, nothing more & nothing less.
The GLW is recognisable as a Wyandotte, but is not a good example of the breed.

PS I am really glad we do not have hatcheries ,other than for commercial hybrids & broilers.

I agree, her color looks more like what I would exexpct from a Columbian X Silver laced bird and her type is way off to be called a Wyandotte. But she is a really pretty bird.
