Welcome to BYC! Chickens are a great hobby, especially since you're retired! Plenty of time to take care of the chickens.
 
My dear mother told me chickens would be too much work for her at her age (61)... and now she nonchalantly asks if I want to keep the girls at her house instead! I think you'll be just fine

My great uncle kept his chickens until he was in his 90's
