I have free range chickens of Several different breeds. One of my favorite things is when they see me coming and come running hoping to get a treat or to be fed. Their feeders are never empty but they enjoy eating off of the ground. I also Stop by the bait shop and buy some crickets for them which they really love. I still haven't had that great feeling you get when your pullets lay their first eggs. But I bought some hens the day before yesterday and was excited to find 19 eggs in the nest boxes when I got home yesterday evening. I was glad to find eggs. I was even more proud that they used their new nest boxes. 4 even chose to use a milk crate that's half full of hay.

I can't imagine how proud of them I'll be when they hatch their own babies. I'm even planning on building broody pens to put them in while they set and keep the babies safe once they hatch.

I have only had my chickens for three and half weeks, but I love the day my rooster crowed, I think it's so great to be able to hear my very own rooster...instead of going out on the porch at 4am- just to be able to hear my closest neighbor's roo (over 1/2 mile away) and I am sure I will be thrilled when I get eggs (they are 20+weeks old)--So, listen for my squeal!!!

There will be something that stands out. I have 4 Russian Orloffs. They claim Orloffs avoid human contact. I have one that follows me everywhere. I tell my fiancé that she has a crush on me. Last week she jumped up on my shoulder.

I like it best when I drive up to my house or look out my window and see all those pretty colors on my green lawn. People around here don't get to see many free range chickens and they really enjoy driving by to see them. Some folks drive 4 miles out of town to drive by and see the chickens free ranging in my yard and orchard!

I also like to gather those beautiful brown eggs from the nest. Their color variations, the smoothness of the shell, the smell of the hay....it never gets old to me.

Well, i love everything about chickens.. But i'd have to say my favorite times are when i get to breed/cross birds and see what comes out of them. But nothing beats the feeling (in my opinion) of breeding the birds to be the top, and then them winning a show knowing. That, that was your time, money, birds, and "breeding expertise" that did that.. I don't even have to be the one that took/won the show, i get just as much joy from knowing someone i sold birds to took BV, RV, SC or whatever.. Really looking forward to get back into competition soon since i haven't been in/around it/or breeding chickens for a couple years:cool:.

I love and am proud of the fact that we are raising our own heatlhy food. That is what I love best about my chickens. And who can't love a baby chickie!!!!?
