What about your birds gives you the best feeling or makes you proud?

Crowing for the first time is a great one. Big Red my NHR was first. Very rough and raspy. Then it was Johnny Cash my Minorca(my avatar). Loud and clear. Then Little Red my RIR. Kind of rough but I was still proud of him. Then my Black Australorp, no name yet, he actually was kind of quiet, but he had the best "ur ur ur ur urrrrrrrr" like the ideal crow. Then. two nights ago, Hawk my Russian Orloff just now 17 weeks finally gave it a try. It was rough and sad, but I was proud of him most. I didn't know what to expect of him. I don't know much about the breed and he's been very quiet and stays away from the other birds and just hangs out with his 3 Orloff hens. As a man I think I relate more to the Roosters. So I'm proud of the crowing and I'll be proud when I get fertile eggs.

I think I'm most proud of how healthy our flock is. Having started from scratch, and not knowing a thing about chickens, I think we did pretty good. Out of 9 girls of laying age and ability, we average about 6-8 eggs a day. Not bad, huh?

As to what brings me the greatest joy...oh boy! Can't even begin to narrow that down to just one thing. But, again, watching everyone being so healthy and happy has to be at the top of the list.

Unless it's extremely hot, as it is now, these girls never sit still for a moment. They're constantly pecking about, chasing down bugs, scratching up the compost heap (one of their favorite places to be) coming over to see what I'm doing....They're just terribly busy all day long!

And a busy bird is a happy, healthy bird. I must have done something right, eh?!

I take great joy and pride in being able to give my neighbors and friends fresh eggs any time they come over. And they're always so appreciative of the gift I and my girls are able to give them. Folks are always so stunned at their first dozen box of truly farm fresh eggs. The SIZE is what gets them first, then the amazing taste.

It's a sure bet that if I ever decided to actually SELL eggs, I'd have a steady line up of customers.

Just simply being in the company of chickens brings me great joy. They're better than TV, better than chocolate, better than......ok, I better stop right there! This is a FAMILY website!!

I love it when they are all excited when they see me..*yes, its because i bribe them with food..but anyways..*
I love it that my hubby has trained a chicken to come..*like a dog* He says "come on, time for bed!" just to her, and she'll follow him all way across the yard on his heels, into the coop every night to be put to bed..

I love all the beautiful egg colors they give me.

I love how when I let the girls out to free range for a couple of hours in the evenings, and it's time to go back in for the night, they almost never fuss about going back in. When I call and tell them that it's time to go in, the mamas will cluck to their chick and everyone will make their way back to the run while grabbing bugs and last bits of grass on the way. Then I toss them in about a half of cup of scratch to top off their foraging. We're all just happy!

I hate when it rains because I can't stay out with them, so I don't let them out on those occasions and we're all disappointed. It rained tonight.

Rain? I don't think it has stopped since Saturday. I Unloaded near you in Bauxite today. There was a nasty storm around noon. And I don't see any end in sight.

We have a Buff that lives a sequestered life on the front porch, the roos don't bring her chocolates, flowers or rub her feet - I see her point. The fun thing about her is she runs in the front door any chance that she get and struts down the hallway. I sometimes take her to the fridge for cheese or lunch meat, she can't have nitrates so I leave that for me to eat later.

I just have to comment on how much I love your description of your flock, rescued dogs and home tucked in the pines. Beautiful RCJ! Just beautiful!

I love it when they come running. I know they recognize me cause they don't do it to anyone else. Even if it is for food and treats

I know! THis one Cuckoo Maran hen we have is the trouble maker of the flock...Shes the only one that has figured out how to fly over the run fence. So Miss Princess maran gets to spend all day in the yard eating grass and playing with my ducks. And every night my hubby goes out and tells her its time for bed and she runs right after him..its amazing how she follows him around.. (personally, i think shes got her eye on my man..
hmm.png
.. ) So anyways....Princess runs after him and he lets her back into the run..where she is immediatley molested by the roo for messing with another man and being gone from the flock all day long with out his permission. Then after that he has to pick her up every night and put her on the roost and tell her good night. She literally waits at his feet and looks up at him to pick her up every night. Spoiled?

Well thank you. I need to update the bird count by about 59 but it's hard to do on my phone. Monday -
I met a man selling out of the chicken business for now and I bought all of his birds. 42 in all. 10 RIR's, 15 white leghorns, 5 brown leghorns and 12 assorted sex links and white leghorn/RIR crosses. I got those home and jumped right back into the truck and went to meet a man selling 16 Cinnamon Queens. I got all of them home safely and their has been no problems joining the 3 flocks. My Roosters are already breeding with the new hens. And my pullets that haven't started laying yet are more relaxed and happy without the Roos only having them to chase. Life is good. Now I'm the Proud Poppa to w
