Hi All,

we brought our ladies nearly a week ago now at a Farmers Market Auction. We were told they were POL Pullets.

I have added some pictures to see if any of you can narrow that down a bit so we can find out how old they are?

I don't know what a POL pullet is, but just on basic chicken knowledge and a guess (since it's hard to gage size from a picture), i'm going to say 16 weeks-ish.

I would start looking for eggs in the next one to two months.....if it were me. This is a guess. I will look forward to hear what others' guesses are.

Beautiful chickens!

They are Red Sex-links.

ETA: Oh sorry, I thought you wanted to know the breed. But if they are Point of Lay pullets, I'd imagine they're around 20-25 weeks of age. That's the usual time when hens lay.

WOW you bought the best chicken there is for the family flock. Red sex linked pullets abot 18 weeks old. You will get the most eggs from them plus the largest.

haha thanks.

If i purchased/were given chickens as "Point of Lay," i would assume that they were at about 20 weeks. But i don't know if there are some "official" designation rules about the term. And yours certainly could be at about 20 weeks. I know that in my own flock, the maturity of 19 chickens that are all exactly the same age varies a LOT. Are they laying?

No there not laying yet, had them a week on Wednesday so were gathering they need more time to settle. They are getting brave now and walking right up to us and venturing more around the garden and for longer.

We are really chuffed with our Hens, we nearly brought 5 ex battery hens for only £3.50 the lot (Approx $5) but gathered it would be too much hard work for first time chicken carers!

Glad that people are saying there good chickens for eggs, they are really friendly as well and we are starting to see their individual characteristics already

Congratulations on your new girls! They really are gorgeous, and friendliness is a nice bonus too.

Also, thank you for adding a new word to my vocabulary. "Chuffed." Nice.

I'm not sure about the age, but I wanted to say that those are BEAUTIFUL pictures! The birds are lovely too, but the pictures are amazing. If I had to guess, I'd say they're still a bit shy of being ready to lay. They look full grown, but their combs are still small. Congrats on your new flock!

I have 2500 of those in organic production. Point of lay is usually around 20 weeks. I'd say they are just shy of that.

If you want them to start laying, start feeding a layer ration and increase their lighting 15-30 minutes a week until they are all laying.
