What age do I stop using a heat lamb on the chicks

Hi everyone,

can someone tell me at what age do i stop using the heat lamp on my chicks? mine turned 4 weeks old yesterday and its 75 fairinhieght in the house

they should be fine, mine are a little over 2 weeks & they are outside in a brooder with out a light & are doing fine.

We're pretty new to raising chickens, but ours were 4 - 5 weeks old when we took the heat lamp away. The thermometer I bought proved to be no good, so I just watched them to see if they were staying away from the lamp (too hot), or staying tightly against each other (too cold), to determine if they were comfortable or not. It seemed to work just fine. Good luck.

I will keep an eye on them to see if the heat lamp is too hot. Thats a good tip.

Most chicks fully feather out somewhere around 4 to 5 weeks of age, depending partly on breed and partly on how well they have been fed. In the summer, I usually take the heat light away around 4 weeks but if the nights are cool, I wait until 5 weeks. I raise mine in the coop, not in the house.

If yours are in the house, I'd take it away at 4 weeks and see what they do. If they huddle together and give a loud plaintive distressful peep, peep, peep, turn the light back on. If they peep a lot but don't huddle, they are scared of the dark but not cold. They'll get over that. Dropping the temperature by 5 degrees every week yours should be fine at 70 to 75 degrees anyway.
