what age do the combs start to develop?

i'm sure the answer is somewhere on here but i can't find it. just curious as to when i will be able to start to tell between the boys and girls

Differences may start to become apparent by 4 or 6 weeks. It may take up to three or four months until you can know for certain, with some! I was in doubt with an RIR for about five months

Roosters will start to have bright, plump, red combs and you'll eventually see "saddle feathers" (feathers that look like they grow from the tail base and hang down towards their thighs).

At four or six weeks, you can post pictures on the forum and I'm sure someone will be able to help you!

My golden comets are 5 weeks and they are starting to get combs. They are all pullets. I am still waiting for what I think are roosters. They are only 3 1/2 weeks..no combs yet. I do have one that seems to be the top chick. Sits up on the perch above all the others and "watches" them. lol. Hope that one is a rooster.

All our chicks that hatched March 1 already have combs ranging from barely there (our Old English Game) to where'd that red thing come from?!! (our Orpingtons). It really depends on the breed. Some mature quickly, some mature slowly. Our White Cochins from the March 14th hatch still look like fuzzy little babies compared to the rest of the chicks from that hatch... and the SLWs from that hatch all are developing combs and have wattle slits.
