What all do I need to buy in order to make this?

I have a feeder now made of PVC pipe and they just waste a lot of food by scratching it out..so I thought about making something different but I've never done this before...in order to make what's in the youtube video...will the things I've linked from amazon work..or will i need to buy extra? if I'm going to need to buy more than what I've posted in the two links please let me know what..I'm still new to this. Thanks

I don't like that feeder in video, since chickens will still waste a LOT of feed from the bottom of that pan.
Check out this style of feeder. There are threads on BYC with same/similar.

You can make the holes with a keyhole saw if you want. Just takes a little more patience, and time.
I also think a 4 inch PVC is better than 3 inch.

Or an electric jigsaw.

I agree with cavemanrich. Made one like that using a hole saw and had a tight fit. Still let rain enter and got moldy feed. Water proofing on the outside is taste tested by the chickens. Best to put these undercover. Hole saw will be a challenge to get a tight fit on, especially if you haven't played with these before. You can make it work, running a properly sized hole saw on a drill BACKWARDS makes for a better, smoother cut. Run it in reverse slowly. In forwards, the saw is too aggressive and tears. There a couple of other no waste chicken feeder videos that will suggest this. Search this site too.

I took mine away after the squirrels started digging out ALL the feed to eat the choice pieces. Play with the design to see what works for your flock. I need to get mine back out. Works great and lasts for several days (depending on squirrels and the size of your flock).

My chickens ate the house caulking AND the silicone.

I bought the hole saw figuring the friction fit would be close to waterproof. Nope.

I was able to fit 7 feeding tubes in, but then couldn't waterproof the inside. If you limit it to 2 or 4, it may work. Sounds like feeder number 3 is about to be created.

2 openings should be enough for small flock. They just have to take turns. One option on sealing, and not having chickens eat the caulk,,,,,, is to caulk from the inside of bucket. Nothing to eat from exterior of bucket then.

I don't even use the bolt & wing nut (yet) - as I wanted to see if this idea would work.

Yes they still waste some, sometimes they knock the bucket "cattywampus" too. But it has worked well for us this summer with a variety of "tubs" (that aluminum type is probably the best, I used excess trash can lids and the lids from pickle barrels that I had before buying the tubs).


I also purchased the parts for the pvc elbows in the buckets - but haven't gotten around to doing that yet... Maybe over Christmas when I'm off for 2 weeks. I need to do a feeder that I can hang in our chicken tractors and don't want to have to constantly pick it up but want it to hang. Will try the two styles already shown here (w/ smaller buckets) and also a pvc pipe trough that will run most of the length of the 8' long tractors. Then decide which I like best and any others i build will be that style.

I did this exact feeder with the same PVC elbows except I used a 3" hole saw. No need to use any cement as they fit super snug, almost difficult to get in but they work great with no movement. I put 3 of them in the 5 gallon bucket for our 8 pullets. You can get the hole saw kit at Harbor Freight with several different size saws.

This is what I built for my birds, it'll hold 50+ of layer pellets, the little they dump on the floor they'll eat so no real loss. Other than the plexiglass the rest was just some wood I had laying around.

I like the plexiglass front. It shows condition of feed, in case it got moist, and started trip south.
