What am I dealing with?? I've lost 5 birds in 2 months

Could you just mix the 22% and 16% for 19% overall? Would actually be cheaper too. My local mill mixes their grower with another one of their feeds to make an 18%. It was mash and my ladies just made a mess of it, but maybe if your feeds are the same pellet/crumble/ect that they are used to it could work?

I agree, I'd get a necropsy if possible.

The rooster, are/were there any lesions inside the beak? Canker comes to mind or perhaps cancer. Hard to know without testing.

Call your lab, I think GA has 6-7labs, ask if you can send some photos if it's not possible to take/send a body in. If you lose another one, often the body can be shipped, the lab will send you a label (email) that you can print. Sometimes shipping is even cover by the lab, depending on state/services. Refrigerate, don't freeze the body (double wrapped in plastic). The link below shows lab locations. The other shows how to ship.

Final update. I did switch to 16%, though that did not seem to make a different. They're all molting, too.

I took two to the lab. The first died of hepatitis. The second died of lymphoma, and the report said I should consider my entire flock as exposed to Marek's ad to vaccinate all incoming birds. I lost another bird in that time, too. So I'm down from 33 to 24 in a couple of months.

Any suggestions on good year-round hatcheries that vaccinate? And the most hardy heritage breeds? No hybrids. Over the years, I've had Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, New Hampshire Reds, Americaunas, Black Australorps, and Golden Comets.

I think I liked the Barred Rocks, reds, and Orpingtons the best. Any other breed suggestions, though?

Sorry for the diagnosis of lymphoma. Lymphomas are tumors commonly seen in Mareks and lymphoid leukosis viruses. There are testing labs such as RAL (Vetdna) and Zoologix that can do blood testing pca tsts on a live bird if you have them send you the materials to collect a blood specimen from a cut toenail. Then you send that in and they will inform you if testing is positive or not. It is pretty inexpensive. Many use these labs for testing for respiratory disease as well. Here are the links for them:

Thanks. And awesome! I didn't know they did this, but I guess I should have expected it.

I think most of the big hatcheries will vaccinate, you just need to select it when you order. I think that the actual genetic line may be more important in some cases than the breed itself. I know some have said that they had brahma's that did better, I had terrible losses in my brahma's. Egyptian Fayoumi's are known for being more resistant to the virus, but they are not as easy to keep as other breeds, particularly if you have limited space. Mine have done very well. But they do need more space than a less active, heavier bird. They are escape artists, fly better, and dig a lot, don't much like being confined, and are noisier. They are also more flighty and spazzie. I'm hoping to get some crosses with my other breeds next year, to see if I can pass down the resistance and maybe lower the flightiness of them some. Time will tell. I've heard buff orpingtons may do less well with Marek's, but I don't have personal experience with them. My barred rocks have also done pretty well, as well as most of my EE's. I also have blue rocks (Andalusian/barred rock crosses) that have done well, and so far their offspring, which are all mixes in my flock with EE's so far, are doing well. If you have Marek's then the particular strain can make a difference as well. It may take some time and experimenting to see what birds do best in your flock. I started keeping a log/diary so I can keep track and remember. As time goes by they all kind of start to blur together, and it's hard to remember Marek's vs reproductive vs other causes. I try very hard not to hatch from birds that have either had symptoms, or have previously hatched chicks from them that have shown symptoms.

I have limited experience with all of this, but I did get a Mareks positive on a blood test I sent in. The 3 I have lost were a Jersey giant, showgirl, and orpington. My EE, Brahma, and Speckled Sussex are all over a year old now and doing well. I suspect they were the original carriers as I bought them as 6 month olds, but who really knows. Of my younger bunch, I have a legbar and buckeye that have struggled. The mixed breeds have fared well. I'm guessing breed wise it's a bit of a crap shoot. I plan to vaccinate any chicks I may add in the future and get them directly from a hatchery. I'm sorry you are going through this. I know how upsetting it can be.
