Shoot in the base of the skull pointing forward. One shot should do the job - the gun and ammunition you are using are more than adequate.

It can be a difficult shot to make as the coon will generally keep looking up at the gun muzzle. Wait your time and don't shoot until the coon puts it's head down. As you are aware there is a never ending number of coons. Keep your traps set 24/7. Good luck at protecting your birds.

You can also just shoot them in the heart too....
