What am I doing wrong?

Well, I've not completed a hatch myself, yet, but could it be that the blood rings in the eggs are from contamination or improper storage? The guide at this link has lots of useful info.: http://gallus.tamu.edu/extension%20publications/b6092.pdf
It
indicates blood rings could be from incubating old eggs.

Well, maybe this will help. I have eggs in the incubator as of almost 24 hours ago....waiting to see how my hatch goes. There are so many factors! I'm so nervous!!

Hope this try works better for you

Just wanted to say that I tried the pill bottle/sand trick with the digital thermometer and it seems to be pretty accurate.
I am still getting a range of temp from 77.4 to 103.4 even after I moved my thermostat closer to the bulb.
However, the digital thermometer is not going as high or as low as the digital thermo/hygro that I also have in the bator. It is about 2 degrees higher at the lowest and about 2 degrees lower at the highest.
Does that mean that the internal egg temp will stay within those boundaries? I sure hope so.
My previous hatch in this bator the temps stayed within two degrees. Don't know what happened. All I did was clean it out.

Just a thought. and remmber Im a newbie lurking around reading about all this and I havent hatched my own eggs yet but if they really are blood rings < me I would wait the days to see but Im wierd> anyways and there bad eggs after this batch is out of the bator I would caerfully clean it out really well and disenfect everything, carefully , even the water pan rack ect, and make shure to get a brand new never used sponge as well. just a thought so that everything starts out clean and fress the next time you use it and If i remmber correctly youre sapose to wash youre hands befor handleing the eggs . Good luck.
