Meet 'Cutie Patootie'. (Thus dubbed by my 6yr old - who is also hoping it is a 'he' since we ordered all females.) He was included as our 'free exotic chick' from Murray McMurray that we received yesterday. Based on his fuzzball on his head we are guessing he is some sort of crested breed. Going through M.M.'s cresteds that have online there are only 2 that have black/whiteish chicks. They are the Silver Polish and the Crevecoeurs. (Unless somehow he would be considered 'brown', then he might be a Golden Polish'?) This is our first batch of chicks ever, and I didn't even consider any thing fancy when I was researching breeds. SOOOO, anyone want to hazard a guess on Cutie Patootie's breed? CP in the front

Thank you! We just got our first chicks on Monday and I tried to order a variety so someone inexperienced can keep track of who is who! My 6yr old is anxious to name everyone, but so far Cutie Patootie is the only one I can tell for sure apart!

Also, this chick seems to have a protruding vent. Is that normal for the breed? It was kind of red and being pecked at when he came out of the box, but he was pooping normally. The other chicks seem to have stopped pecking it, and it is no longer red, but still pokes out and doesn't have down around it.

Okay, the protruding vent...does it seem to flex open and closed frequently? I also have a chick (now 5 weeks old) that came to me at 3 days old with a swollen and very visible vent. I didn't think she would make it, but she's doing fine now. Except, her vent is still rather visible and kind of...pulses constantly. Ugh. I don't know if that is normal or not, most chicken butts aren't visible!

Just make sure the other chicks don't pick on her little bottom--it can be a target till the area is covered with down/feathers.

It does seem to pules a bit. The others were pecking at it when he came out of the box, but after a little water and food he perked up and started defending himself/avoiding situations (keeping his back to the wall. I haven't seen them pecking at it since the 1st day, and it is no longer red. Otherwise he acts fine.
