What animal dug this burrow?

Good luck!
Traps should be placed along critters travel path.
Snap traps work best with bait end of trap up against a wall.

I didn't consider a rat cause I never heard of them burrowing into the ground, leaving earth trailings outside the burrow.

Ohh they will do exactly that for sure. When I first had rats tunneling into my quail aviary, I thought it was my dog digging. My 40 pound dog.... Nope....rats.

Update- the traps did not catch anything. The bait (peanut butter) appeared untouched. The burrow was short and had two entrances. The feces of the animal was black and round, 1/2 the size of a pea. See photo. It had also tried to dig another hole beside the foundation of my house, but only dug 2 inches deep. See photo. It is still there. My dog is unrelenting in circling the kennel, trying to catch whatever it is.

Sure looks like rat poop...next time lay a quarter down for scale in pic.

This is the shallow hole it dug beside the foundation of my house. I covered it with a brick to impede any more progress.

Did a rat do this?

Could also be squirrel... I did some researching online and was mildly amused at how many poop websites there are lol

It’s been raining all day. My poor chickens are walking around in mud because of poor drainage. No sign of the mystery creature.
