Frightening but True
The lady in Canada was within 5 minutes walk, on a walking trail, within earshot of other humans. She attempted to escape them (3) by getting into a public toilet but was dragged away and partially consumed. Good Samaratains who ran to the sound of her screams had to throw rocks to get 1 of them to abandon the "feast". I learned of that after this happened to me:
Let me tell you what happened to me one Saturday:
Scene: No One can hear our alarms let alone hear you scream on my farm. It is 7:30 AM a bright, sunny, relatively warm (20 degree) day. Husband away, me, dog, 11 hens outside in the snow just milling about. A bird in the trees starts alarming like it was afraid of something in the woods 50 feet away. The bird moves along with the offending whatever it was. I move to investigate 2 different times and see nothing. Then the bird quiets. I get a nervous feeling. It's too quiet. I walk away from the house and am confronted with 2 coyotes in the 10 corridor between the house and the shop. They are 5 to 7 from me and I am between them and the chickens. I froze. I look for something to throw but there is nothing on top of the snow and I am empty handed. I raise my arms, shout & stamp. They stood their ground and the front one barred its teeth. I continued and it started to snarl. The dog came up from behind me and froze. He made no threat but wagged his tail and wanted to play with them (DUH!) They finally turned and walked away slowly, unafraid, looking back often. The dog moved ahead and stopped in the corridor so I turned to grab up the chickens. I told the stupid and barely trained rescued dog to stay. As Im gathering the last of the chickens and have 3 more to throw into the safety of the garage, the dog starts to follow the coyotes. He disobeys me completely and starts chasing after them to play. I turned to the chickens and got the rest in then I went calling for the dog. No dog. Im scared and shaking. I hid in the house remembering my stupidity of going out to look for the dog, still with nothing in my hands. The dog returns in 1&1/2 hours, luckily unscathed.
