I've raised quite a few types of different animals. Chickens can be a profit maker, but mine have cost far more than they bring in at this point. Because of all the expensives for coop building, and chicks, and waters, and blah. But hopefully in a few years. lol
Actually the cheapest to own, and easiest to profit have been my Kinder goats!
I have a one acre pasture, that completely feeds my 9 goats. $0
I have well water. $0
I feed them some grain for treats, and for the younger or milkers. $10 a bag that lasts 3 months.
Wormer cost about $8 and last like a year.
Cheap cheap cheap. And I have nice expensive stock that look healthy as can be.
I bought each goat for around $200 a piece. This breed has 2-5 kids a year. Selling at $150+ a kid. Overturns a HUGE profit in a short time.
And that is not counting at all the milk which in my town sells for $5 a gallon. The soap, cheese, butter, and fiber you can get from them. Which all adds to your profit.
Kinder goats have a big market, because they are rare, and can be milk or meat.
The closest breeder is about 3 hours away, and the biggest Kinder herd in the US is about 5 hours away. So they are rare around here, yet close enough to get some nice stock from them.
And if you can't sell to a breeder, they also make great pets.
I have found the Foreignors are always looking for goat meat
around my house. So I already have all my unborn kids sold at $150+!
They are the only animals I have truely made back enough money to say they are worth more than just pets.
They are also the easiest pets to own. Fill up their water, give them some hay (or pasture), and some love. Their poop mess is small, so does not need to be cleaned up except for in stalls, but outside it just washes away.
And as a sidenote, Goats are wonderful pets, and will always keep you entertained! I love mine!
ETA: I just realized your in Illinois so am I. lol. I would be glad to hook you up with Kinders. I know lots of nice breeders out there.
