What are chicken nipples?

I have wondered this as well! We have chickens, ducks, and a goose. They are mess with water inside the coop. Outside we keep pools and I don't care how messy they are :) But I saw those nipple waterers and wondered if adult birds would use them or if it is something you have to start as babies? I would hate for any of our birds to suffer while we tried it out.

The watering nipples fit onto the bottom of a bucket or onto a run of pipe, typically. The birds tap the metal protrusion with the beak and water drips out with each tap. They can drink all the water they want to drink without having a pan or other such to clean or refill.

Mine are mounted into a run of PVC pipe that is fed from a 5 gallon bucket. I can fill or clean the bucket from outside the run without disturbing the chickens or going inside the run.

Here is an example of the product. http://www.avianaquamiser.com/chickennipple/

You can get them from a variety of sources.

The chickens took to them immediately. Once one of them found it, the others were all over it. I took the water pan out immediately.

Many on the forum use them.

I went to a local grocery store to the bakery dept. They had an empty 5 gallon icing bucket that they gave me. I have it suspended in the run with 3 nipples on the bottom. My peeps also took to it in no time. Sure saves from changing water all the time.

Now with the heat I fill a large empty gatorade bottle with water and freeze it. Open the top of the bottle and in goes the frozen bottle to provide my girls with cold water.

They sound great... Do ducks and geese use these as well? As I said, I like water in the coop because they have pools outside all day but we have to lock them down in the coop at night due to coons.
