What are chicken saddles and what are they for?

Okay, I have a really stupid question. What is a chicken saddle and what is it for? Is it more
than a hen accessory?

Sorry for the dumb question, I am new at chickens 4 days into it to be exact.

They are usually made of fabric and protect the hens back from roosters during mating. Not all hens need them. Some roosters are more aggressive than others and can hurt the hens back over time.

Out of 13 hens only one of mine has to wear a saddle. My rooster really, REALLY likes her.
