I have been reading about chickens in my chicken magazine from hobby farms. love it. Just looking for ideas on snacks for chicken. I have so far given them lettuce, the green tops to the carrots, and clover. What else can the eat from the garden? Or from a yard in the country. Keeping in mind I live in upstate NY.

Our chickens like to eat grapes, but pretty much leafy veggies from the garden are ok for them to eat. We don't let our chickens out because when we do, they tear up our cabbage and silver beet

As for non-garden things you can give them yoghurt and biscuits. That's a favourite round here. :p

Welcome!!! Yogurt is the top treat at our house, along with corn on the cob, wild bird seed, breads, berries. But for stuff from the yard, , , WORMS! I send my kids out to dig for worms every couple days to feed to the ladies for a snack :) they almost take the kids out getting to them

Hello, my chickens love grapes, berries, and cherries, anything that rolls when you feed it to them, they go crazy over them and chase them. I think they think they are alive, like bugs and worms, which they love as well. Sometimes I'll throw them some as I am gardening, so much fun to watch them chase each other around trying to steal the worms from each other. They also have a sweet tooth and love any leftover desserts! Cooked rice is another fave. Plus all the good green stuff out of the garden. I even give them my spent pea and bean plants and they eat the leaves off of them.
Have with with them trying new treats!

Glad to have you aboard!!!

Mine love the following
  • grape leaves
  • clover
  • worms
  • blueberries
  • Any green kitchen veggie scraps
  • the strip of fat from ham (we cut it up so it is easier and eaten by more than one bird)

I have heard these are wonderful treats for them but not tried the following
  • mealworms
  • crickets
  • yogurt
