Wow! I'm coming out there if I ever want to sell hens!

(I'll let you know in plenty of time so you can get a room ready for me

) Honestly, I don't know how far I'd have to travel to sell chickens for that much. Closer toward the Twin Cities, obviously...
Well, I knew I had them priced high-ish, but I had a lot invested in those birds! It does bother me to see folks underpricing their birds or eggs. I have ads on my CL right now giving away 2 year old RIR birds--pretty much the same thing I just got $10 a head for. One thing that helped was, I was in no big hurry to sell them. I'm sure there were lots of folks that read my ad, snorted at the price, and moved on. And that's fine. There are also some folks in this world that have a way of thinking that's foreign to me---they think if something is lower priced or free, it's not as good as something that costs more. Now, I'm not applying that to retail/new goods, but to backyard chickens. My 2 year old hatchery birds were just the same as the ones offered for free, but some folks passed on the free birds and called me instead. 2 different folks drove over 20 miles to get my birds. With the popularity of backyard chickens rising, I'd say try advertising them a little higher and see what happens. You can always come down on the price later, but it's real hard to jack it back up!

Then again, bobbi-j, aren't you pretty rural? Might not work for your area. My area is several smaller towns and a few big towns/tiny cities, with lots of small rural areas. So, bigger population to draw from than you may have.

You hit the nail on the head. We are very rural, and if a person wants chickens, they have them. They're nothing special here - especially 2-year old hens. Good for you for getting your price, though!

Well, when you want to sell some hens, just toss them in the truck and head west--give me a call to put the dogs up and open the gate and fix extra for dinner
