what are peacocks and peahens like?

I have one Indian Blue Peacock and three peahens. I let them free range and they DO range! They make full use of my five acres and they habitually pay the neighbors down the road a visit.

Mine are not that noisey - at least so far - but I know what they sound like. In fact my male hasn't made a scream yet as far as I know but I go belly-boating at a nearby lake and one of the folks must have a peacock because it screams constantly and you can hear it from the other end.

Like the man said, it will make your hair stand up on end. The girls make sort a honking sound.

They do like to hang around cars where they can see their reflections and will peck at their reflection as well.

One other thing you should know that hasn't been mentioned is that they are tremendous flyers. I mean they can go as high and as long as they want to with no problem at all.

Where are you? I'll be getting rid of a couple of my peahens.

Hope that helps.

God Bless,

We have green peafowl in New England.
Coop not heated and we have had no problems.
Kept with other fowl (chickens and guineas).
Male doesn't wander and doesn't scream at all. He's only 2.5, though, so maybe he will?
Not cuddly, but will approach us for food.
Free range (not too far) every day and return to the coop on own every night.
Like to hang around with the guineas and turkeys. Never left the property. (Guineas and turkeys have gone to the neighbors once or twice and needed to be brought back.)

Enjoy these beautiful birds!
Smiles,
Kate

Only call during breeding season, myself I love their call, and so do my neighbors.

Like all free range if you let them bother you neighbors, you are asking for trouble.

Are great flyer, but far from predator proof, owls, dogs, dogs, dogs, coons, all will take full grown peafowl.

Raise them just like turkey you will be ok.

Yes mine are not free range, sounds like your neighbors let their run all over your place. Just like mine let their 20 dogs free range the neighborhood.

They can be train to roost in trees or barns, and not on the house.

I will respectfully disagree!
I also know that you don't do any of that!!
Free range peafowl are pretty predator proof; they see what ever is coming and fly off and I have seen them taunt coyotes and bobcats in my yard. They are easily killed in a pen however.
The only way to keep them off your house roof or your car is to shoot them.
Free range they are unbelievably noisy, penned you're right only during breeding season do they call.
Free range peafowl multiply very well and their chicks while subject to occasional predation are hardy.
Yes I tolerated my neighbors 20 odd peafowl for way to long and I can tell you they can't be trained to do anything! Notice past tense for tolerated.
You know, I don't call free range dogs or my neighbors used to be peacocks free ranging, I call it too lazy and cheap to take care of them until the neighbors get a gut full and do what ever it takes to take care of them.
I also know that you take care of yours and you have good birds and are in a different situation.

I've actually had a mink kill one of my full grown pied peafowl, while they can be noisy when they want, ours only ever made noise when:
1. breeding season
2. when something scared them
3. when one of thier mates die
4. when they spot predators (that could go for nieghbors that don't like them)

They can be trained to roost else where instead of the roof if you have a long stick to scare them off, eventually they do get the idea.

I'm sorry that you've had a bad expiriences with them, but I assure you that shooting whatever ticks you off is not the answer.

Have sold very many peahens to people to replace their free range peahens that were kill by predators. So anyone beware if free ranging peahens, good odds you can loss them when they go setting.
