Hello,

I live in the city and want to raise Chcikens for eggs and meat. I was wondering what is the least noisiest Chciken breeds for eggs and meat?

I might like to breed them so are the males noisy in those breeds also?

I will wait for a response.

All hens have the potential to be noisy especially when they get excited. Also all males can crow so I would not advise them in the city.

Someone told me about Silkies are pretty quite, but they would not be good eaters.

What about other birds, pheasants and ducks.....? What is the quitest?.?

A lot of the bantam breeds lay small eggs so aren't useful for dual purposes for some people. Pheasants are not a bird I would keep in the city and aren't great layers. Female ducks are LOUD regardless of breeds with the exception of the Scovy.

I don't know if this is true for all, but my Salmon Favorolles are quiet. They are at the bottom of my pecking order so that may be why. My loudest girls are the Welsummer and Rhode Island Red, which are neck and neck for the top hen spot. All 3 lay large eggs.

My Speckled Sussex is fairly quiet too, and I believe they are dual purpose. Really, no matter what you get, they won't be any louder than a large dog barking at something.

So what other breeds of chickens are there that arn't loud? Does anybody else have past experiences to share?

Are Silkies meat birds as I didn't think so?

Silkies are a traditional table birds for some foreign countries but aren't as popular as a meat bird in the US.

How loud are Muscovys? Males do they call a lot? Are eggs good for eating?

Silkies eggs are half the size as regular eggs?

A friend of mine has Bantam Cocins that aren't very loud he says. Does anybody know anything about them?

Are Bantam breeds quituier in general?

Muscovies are one of the quiter duck breeds as they don't quack. They do make noise but wont be as loud as say inidan runners. The eggs are great to eat and fantastic for cooking. I think out of all my hens the brahmas are the quietest the roosters are fairly quiet too. I do have bantam cochins too and they are quiet but would be no good as a meat bird. Not all bantams are quiet I have an old english game bantam that is extreemly noisy.

So what breed would you recommend for me? I want to try and get a different/rarer color bird.

I was thinking about 3 or so Orpington's.

Anybody have any experience with this breed. I really like blue and chocolate. Does anybody know who breeds rarer color of them and ships to Canada.

I live in Brampton,ON Canada
