I am all for getting rid of flys and lice or what ever,
We have a bug lite near the coop and I also use Perectrin powder from co-op its safe for animals and one can last a long time enought for 200 chix you can also dust ur chx with it (5.58)
but I am going to try the Penny bag hanger . LoL

I am going to do this today! ziploc bags and hefty bags have been on sale the past two weeks and I have plenty to spare! our fly issues are way worse than I had imagined. we are using straw as bedding in the coop and each week I am hating it more and more. it's like no matter how much I put in there it doesn't seem to work that well. hopefully we can get it all cleaned out and put shavings down. I can deal with dust, but the smell is killing me. I can't seem to get it dry enough. and the run, well it's fine until it rains then PHEW!! is smells bad. we pile leaves in there each week, for them to rummage through and compost for me. after all this rain we have gotten this week, the leaves have kept the run from turning to mud, so I am happy about that. we bought the fly sticky things that you hang from the ceiling (non toxic kind) and it is covered, we are on our second one and it is covered with flies. ugh gotta change this stuff around and see if something else works better than what we are doing now. thanks for the tips everyone!

I'm going to try the baggy/penny idea. I have the sticky things and they stick to my hair all the time (I forget they're there)

ok I hung like 5 bags up in the coop. I was worried that nailing into the plastic, with the weight of the water in the bag, would case the bag to rip, so I strung it up with twine and have them hanging all around the coop. I need to change the fly paper so it can collect the ones still in there. but I have to admit, they aren't landing on the bags that I can tell. I will put up 10 more if I have to.

Lots of great advice here!

I have aluminum window screening in addition to the hardware cloth on all the openings of my coop and run. Due to the screens, there are very rarely any bugs or flies in there, unless the coop door is left open a long time. My chickens miss out on eating the flies for snacks, but it has prevented a larger yucky problem from developing for the rest of the family. My coop and run are relatively small so it was easy and inexpensive.

My neighbor achieved the same results with shade cloth over her hardware cloth. Her coop is in the sun most of the day and the shade cloth keeps out the heat and the flies.

THX!! I don't think I have remembered suing something like this on my rabbit hutch when I was a kid IF you had not brought it up.

Guess in LA you've gotta fight the heat.

(..have you seen the "Live Without People" episode that shows LA turning BACK into a desert?)
