What are the best coyote deterrents?

I haven't built it yet. No, the coop (yes you're right!) would not be elevated. Quail are ground birds. Them going up a ramp would be hit or miss and not worth the addition of an elevated coop because they would rarely use it, and I would probably have to put them up there by hand each time. I also plan for at least 20 quail so even putting them in by hand would be impractical.

Alright! Got an idea. Why not an elevated coop with an elevated run to match. Like a turkey sun porch?

:barnieNo electric fencing??? That's too bad. You said your dirt doesn't allow for buried wire. Does that mean it's hard? If that's the deal then you don't have much to fear with digging. You can apron some wire on top too, no need to dig.

I once had raccoons decide to start a latrine in my vegetable garden. I got them to stop by using chili pepper. I got a big container of crushed red pepper at Costco, the kind you put on pizza. I sprinkled it around the area where they were getting in and they stopped. It doesn't affect birds at all but mammals don't like it. I know nothing about quail, but I wouldn't know why they would be different in that respect.

How habituated to humans are your coyotes? You could also take some clothes you've worn and stuff them with straw or leaves, make a sort of scare crow thing, put it in a lawn chair out by your tractor. Might work for a while, but you'd need to move it around often I would think.

Sorry I keep cluttering up your thread, I've been dodging pests from deer to raccoons to coyotes and hawks and it's a subject I'm always thinking about. Good luck and let us know what you come up with!

I imagined that I wouldn't have a huge problem with digging, but I see mole mounds in my yard in very specific places. Some parts of my yard I wouldn't be able to dig in, but then some are soft enough -- particularly when it rains. :he

I wonder if that would work... Thanks for the tip!

Way too situated. I see them wandering around in our neighborhood at night. :(

Your advice has been AWESOME! Please, keep doing this "cluttering" thing you're doing lol!

what city doesn't allow electric fencing ? i'm sure that for high voltage, anti-human electric fence. totally different from agricultural electric non lethal fence. (i bet your cops have tazers.) where are you? i wanna read the by-law.
also putting an electric Deterrent around coop isn't an electric fence. it's a strand of wire. Also there has to be an agricultural exemption.

Don't wanna reveal my location because it's such a small town, but it very clearly says on the municipal code that using it is ILLEGAL. Though... An agricultural exemption? I never thought about that.

Imma call City Hall and see what they say!! The likelihood is limited since my city is practically spick and span without any exceptions when it comes to the rules. >_<

That's my best bet at the moment. I might just raise them on my deck because it's 6' off the ground and can only be accessed through the house. I really wanted to put them on pasture but this seems like my best bet after learning that electric fencing is a no go and that I can't afford to build the pretty fencing that wouldn't piss off my neighbors. >.>

It seems that your best long term solution would be to move elsewhere! Someplace where electric fencing and other useful things would be possible. Or, have your quail inside a protected shelter all the time.

I am, luckily, planning to move in a year. I would honestly just put up the electric fencing illegally because my yard is so small if it weren't for my indignant and terribly nosy neighbors. >.>

Well good luck to ya!

So what you're saying is, anything useful to deter coyotes is either illegal or hated.:barnie I have very tall fencing that's made to keep deer from jumping over it (maybe 6.5 or 7 feet tall), and larger animals from just ripping through. Also, getting a rooster might help, because most tend to be territorial against predators, and at the least, warn the hens of danger. I hope this helped you. It sounds like it would be less hassle to move.

Tractor Supply sometimes has Havaheart style coyote traps. Around here the cattle farmers sometimes swap around or maybe rent a donkey to keep down coyotes. I guess they kick them. Your neighbors would love that, I suppose. And then you gotta feed and fence the donkey.

KIND OF A LONG EXPLANATION BUT I WANTED TO GIVE YOU ALL THE DETAIL. When my first round of chicks were old enough to be put outside(we have terrible winters) initially we had bought a normal coop (or you could make a little house for them very easily they aren't picky) which I kept in my garage up until my husband told me it was time. So we first decided we wanted it off the ground so we made a stand for that then prob about a month before that I started checking social media and friends and family to see if anyone had any chain link fence they didn't want. And animal lovers offered it up so we did a chain link fence 8 ft high and in most spots overlapped it and lots of moving space around the coop so they could move around. Then in order to keep them from digging under. We dug around the coop and mixed it in with rocks and a 2x4. If they tried to dig under it. It would be extremely hard and take them forever and by then hopefully we would notice. And then we found some metal that worked amazing as a roof so it protected my chicks from bad weather and anything that thought they could climb up the fence was greeted with an extremely thick roof. So far this has been amazing. and for the record i animal loves are usually willing to help other animal lovers. Not to mention there is a shot gun on hand at all times. Good luck we have only lived in our home a little over a year. Last year I think we heard them once and barely. This year its almost nightly and sounds like they are surround us. So they must be really bad this year .
