What are the DQs in Silkies

The numbers relate to the age/gender: 1 on Shay's bird indicate that he placed first amongst all white silkie cocks. There will also be a 1st place hen, cockerel & pullet. From those they will select the best white silkie: BV (best variety). From all the best of each variety they will select the best of breed (BB). From the BB of each breed in a class (for silkies it is featherleg), they will select the Champion Featherleg. From all the Class Champions they will select the Champion Bantam and Champion Large Fowl and Champion Waterfowl. From all these they will select a Show Champion.

OUT means there is no bird in the cage when they are judged. DQ means that the bird was disqualified--the reason is usually written.


StrawberryHouseMouse, those aren't vulture hocks--that is just the leg feathering as it grows in. I believe that chick is too young to tell whether it will grow vulture hocks or not. Rootball's photo shows vulture hocks. Notice the direction of the feathers: towards the back, not downward. Vulture hocks are a DQ for silkies, but I've never seen but one judge pay any attention to their presence. As long as the feathers are silkie, they are pretty indistinguishable; when they are stiff, they are noticeable.

Since I have been showing chickens for nearly 50 years & have been an APA General Licensed judge for over 10 years I'm glad you explained this so I can finally understand it.

If you had said he was first Cock I would have known what you were talking about. In nearly 50 years of showing I had never heard the phrase "Circle 1". How many other Cock Birds were present? How many White Silkies? What was the show?

lol, sorry, I phrased that wrong. LOL My bad.

There was about ohhh let me think prabably around 12 to 15 white silkies.
I cant count how many cocks there where. all breeds a lot.
It was the Boston poultry show in Oxford Mass, this past spring.

This is a picture of my splash roo and blue pullet. He has just started crowing. No eggs yet. I thought he looked pretty nice but I didn't know the comb shouldn't be red.

Sonoran, would these be vulture hocks? I have been calling them that ever since I came across the term, and after seeing Strawberry's silkie, I'm wondering if it was just the feathers coming in? This is my rooster when he was younger.
