What do you think these hens are?

The girls were "playing" in the mud a few days ago so ignore the dirt on their backs.

I was also thinking hatchery Australorps, but the top ones have white earlobes which may indicate that they are a cross with a white egg breed.

Do they all have brownish feathers mixed in with the black? It is hard to tell except for the close up. They might be Black sex links which are terrific layers.

They are all pure black, except for hen # 6 who was sold to me as a black copper maran. The others were sold as (black) marans as well. I am wanting to verify that others that keep Marans agree.

I am by no means an expert, but I do have a couple black copper marans. These don't look like marans to me - both legs and combs seem to be different. Hopefully some one with more experience will be on soon to give you a reliable opinion. If not, you might post the pics in the Marans thread - I'm sure you would get several opinions there.

Blacks are Aussies, at last they look just like mine. The ones with the brown - Black Sex Links. I have two of those also and that's what they look like.

Even though some have whitish lobes, they are Aussies with the exception of the BSL with the red on her. Not a maran.

I have a Buff Orp who has whitish ears and she lays a very light cream colored egg so either she has some leghorn or Minorca in her.
